How to get a name

A walkthrough for getting Handshake TLDs with Namebase.io

You will need HNS in your Namebase account to get Handshake names. If you have not done so, please follow the walkthrough here to buy HNS.

Name search

Visit https://www.namebase.io/domains and use the Power search to find names you want to own. There are 6 possible results to your name search:

Owned — listed for sale

The name is owned by someone else and it's up for sale — you can immediately purchase it.

Owned — unlisted

The name is owned by someone else and it isn't up for sale. Add it to your watchlist to receive an email when the name is listed for sale.

Unopened auction

The auction hasn't started and placing a bid on this — around 30 minutes to confirm — will begin the auction. The auction lasts 720 blocks, and the winner will pay the second-highest bid to receive their Handshake name at the end of the 1440 blocks reveal period; roughly 15 days from when the first bid was placed.

Active auction

The auction is underway. The winner will pay the second-highest bid to receive their Handshake name at the end of the 1440 blocks reveal period.

Unreleased

The name hasn't been released yet. Add it to your watchlist to receive an email when the name is released.

Reserved

The name is either one of the existing ~1,500 blacklisted traditional TLDs or is reserved for a top 100,000 Alexa website.

Blinds and lockups

Lockup Amount = Bid Amount + Added Blind

The bidder with the highest Bid Amount will win the auction. Adding blinds can be useful because they hide the true value of your bid and causes your bids to appear higher to others since everyone else only sees your Lockup Amount. Note the amount you place for your bid is called a "lockup" because you won't get to spend your Lockup Amount until the auction ends.
